Travelling Old Silk Road in aid of Sobell House Hospice, Oxford

Although I have been toying with the idea of travelling the Silk road for several years it never got off the ground as my mother was diagnosed with cancer and I did not want to cause her any more stress or anxiety than she already had – for she did worry about me when I went off on my travels. Sadly my mother died nearly two years ago, so not only will I now undertake to travel across Asia but will do so in my mum’s memory and to help raise funds for Sobell House Hospice, Oxford, a hospice that cares for people with life limiting illnesses and who gave my mother all the support she needed. Sir Michael Sobell House Hospice opened in 1976 as a result of a donation from Sir Michael Sobell, a public appeal and a contribution from the Department of Health, provide care for people in Oxfordshire with life limiting illnesses and support for their families.

Multi-disciplined staff care for the whole person and offer physical, psychological, social and spiritual care those facing illness, death and bereavement. In partnership with all involved Sobell House focus on the quality of life, respecting the uniqueness of each person, and to seek to contribute to the development of palliative care through education and research. Sobell House is also a World Health Organization Centre for Palliative care, and so progress made at Sobell House Hospice can have both local and world wide impact.

A new purpose built hospice was completed in 2003, with 20 beds in the inpatient Unit and 15 places in the Day Hospice, with a large garden being developed. At any one time Sobell House Hospice are helping hundreds of patients to live as constructively and creatively as possibly in the time they have available.

The services provided are free to those that need it regardless of religion, race or creed.
