The Silk road
The
Silk road
extends from mid to eastern China to the west across some 17 countries to eastern Europe. It passes through some of the most diverse and interesting cultures and landscapes in the world.
Dating back to around 105 BCE the
Silk road
was originally used by Chinese Emperor Wudi's emissaries to Persia and subsequently for the silk trade between the east and west.

My Journey
In February 2006, at the start of the Chinese New Year, I will be setting out on an 8 month journey from Beijing, China on a quest to retrace the
Silk road
across Central Asia and the Middle East to Rome, Italy. As there never was a singular route but a series of roads traversing the continent this journey will be a hybrid of these roads. Some of the highlights will be passing through up to 17 countries, crossing deserts, mountain ranges and glaciers, witnessing man’s impact and adaptability to the environment, archaeology from past civilizations to today’s monuments.
My Personal Goals
Although I have been toying with the idea of travelling the
Silk road
for several years it never got off the ground as my mother was diagnosed with cancer and I did not want to cause her any more stress or anxiety than she already had – for she did worry about me when I went off on my travels. Sadly my mother died nearly two years ago, so not only will I now undertake to travel across Asia but will do so in my mum’s memory and to help raise funds for
Sobell House Hospice
, Oxford, a hospice that cares for people with life limiting illnesses and who gave my mother all the support she needed. You can read my biography

My trip is in support of the
Sobell House Hospice Charity
that provides care for people in Oxfordshire with life-limiting illnesses, and support for their families. The hospice is very close to my heart following the death of my mother 2 years ago.
